Product Information

A cam follower is a specialized type of rolling element bearing designed to follow the contour or profile of a cam. It’s commonly used in mechanical systems where motion needs to be translated, guided, or timed—like in automation, engines, or manufacturing equipment.

 

What It Does

A cam follower rides along a cam surface (which may be rotating, oscillating, or translating) and transfers that motion to another part of the mechanism. It’s essentially a rolling contact between the cam and the follower, minimizing friction and wear.

 

Key Components

  1. Stud or Yoke: Acts as the shaft or housing that supports the follower.
    • Stud type: Has a threaded shaft for easy mounting.
    • Yoke type: Has a hole through the body for a pin or shaft to go through.
  2. Outer Roller: The outside of the follower that makes contact with the cam.
    • May be flat or crowned (slightly curved) to reduce edge loading.
  3. Rolling Elements: Bearings (needle rollers or balls) inside the follower reduce friction and allow smooth motion.

 

Types of Cam Followers

 

Type

Description

Stud Type

Has a threaded stud for mounting to a flat surface or bracket. Most common type.

Yoke Type

Has a through-hole for mounting between two supports, better for heavy loads.

Crowned Roller

Outer surface is slightly curved to compensate for misalignment.

Flat Roller

Provides full contact, better for linear applications.
