External Circlip

Product Information

A circlip (short for “circular clip”) is a type of fastener used to secure components on a shaft or inside a bore, preventing lateral movement while allowing rotation.

How It Works:

Circlips are made of spring steel and are designed to fit into a groove machined into a shaft or housing. Once snapped into place, they act as a shoulder to keep components like bearings, gears, or wheels from sliding out of position.

Types of Circlips:

  1. External Circlip – Fits around a shaft.

    • Prevents components from sliding off the shaft.

  2. Internal Circlip – Fits inside a bore or housing.

    • Prevents parts from being pushed into the housing.

Key Features:

  • Easy to install and remove with circlip pliers.

  • Reusable in many cases.

  • Lightweight, yet strong enough for high-speed or heavy-duty applications.

  • Often used where space is limited and you don’t want to use nuts or bolts.

Common Applications:

  • Automotive transmissions

  • Gear assemblies

  • Bearings and shafts

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders

  • Bicycles and machinery
